HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Amid a continued rise in COVID cases statewide, Hawaii reported 485 new infections on Saturday, the highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic.

According to DOH spokesman Brooks Baehr, all of the cases reported on Saturday are from the last 24-hour reporting period, which ended at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. The state-reported COVID cases are based on tests initiated two days earlier.

The spike in cases comes as the state’s health department reported 622 COVID cases on Friday, which officials said was the result of a delay in lab reports and a continued rise cases.

According to Brooks, the disruption to the electronic laboratory reporting system suffered earlier in the week has been fully resolved.

Of the reported cases, 315 were in Oahu, 101 on the island of Hawaii, nine in Kauai and 42 in Maui. There were also 18 residents diagnosed out of state.

Meanwhile, no additional deaths have been reported. The death toll from the virus stands at 537.

In the past 14 days, 2,996 cases have been reported. The number of confirmed infections since the start of the pandemic now stands at 42,410.

State and health officials continue to call for vigilance and encourage residents to get vaccinated.

The state does not provide details on the number of cases in those vaccinated compared to those unvaccinated.
