The Atlanta Hawks are on the line to try to acquire Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward, league sources have told Yahoo Sports.
A sign-and-swap deal is one possible route, but Atlanta is equipped with the highest number of caps in the league at around $ 44 million and can simply sign Hayward to a hefty multi-year deal if he decides to decline his option. .
Atlanta is looking for an alternative playmaker to join alongside young star Trae Young. The Hawks will also be in contention for veteran point guard Rajon Rondo, who turns down his $ 2.7 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers to become an unrestricted free agent, sources said.
Hayward, 30, has a lot of interest, sources say.
The little 6-foot-7 forward has a player option for the 2020-21 season worth $ 34.2 million.
It had a deadline of November 17 to decide its course, but both sides agreed to extend the deadline to November 19. The move is to give more time for discussions to continue on how to move forward, sources said.
The 10-year veteran is averaging 17.5 points, 50% on the court, 38% over a 3-point range while dropping 6.7 rebounds last season for the Celtics.
Hayward has spent the last three years in Boston and before that played seven seasons with the Utah Jazz.
NBA free agency begins Nov. 20.
