Hays County – The process will soon be underway to create a new elementary school attendance zone to accommodate the opening of the 15e primary school. The new campus, located in the Sunfield subdivision, will open in August 2022.

In August 2021, the board of directors voted to form a committee of 14 citizens to review the proposed maps, receive public comment and create a recommendation that will be presented to the board for a vote in December of this year.

“Board policy requires that the district administration create at least two starting point maps for review by the citizens’ committee,” said Tim Savoy, communications manager for Hays CISD. “We encourage anyone who has an opinion to contact the committee by using the special ‘Zone Talk’ button on the committee’s webpage or by attending one of the two public forums. People can also follow the progress of the process, view current draft maps and view all documents presented to the committee on the committee’s webpage.

The committee’s web page is www.hayscisd.net/rezone.

Hays CISD establishes attendance zones for schools in order to:

  1. Maintain the concept of neighborhood school;
  2. Prevent, reduce and eliminate overcrowding; 3. Enable future growth; 4. Keep distances traveled by students as short as possible; 5. Minimize the need for student transportation; and 6. Enable campuses to safely house students and provide adequate services to all students.

The new elementary school was approved by voters as part of the May 2021 Hays CISD Bonds Election. Construction began on the 117,611 square foot campus in June 2021 and features the next generation prototype design of elementary district campus.

The campus will accommodate up to 900 students, from Kindergarten to Grade 5e. The total cost of the project, including construction, furniture, technology and start-up supplies, is $ 38.4 million.
