The Moore County Department of Health will begin pre-registering residents aged 65 and over for the coronavirus vaccination on Wednesday morning.
The agency, which had been planning shots for people aged 75 and over since January 8, is adjusting its process to accommodate people who meet the expanded age criteria announced last week by the Department of Health and Human Rights. “We will continue to schedule appointments for our 75 and over as we move down the list to those aged 65 to 74,” Robert Wittmann, director of the local health department, said in a statement. “We ask everyone to please be patient as it may take some time before you get a call to schedule an appointment for a vaccine.”
The health service administers the first dose of the two-part vaccine to eligible residents on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in its apartment building in Carthage. There is no vaccination fee and health insurance is not required.
Inoculating a larger pool of older adults will be a difficult endeavor in Moore County.
People 65 and older made up about 24% of the county’s total population in 2018, according to the US Census Bureau. The same age group at the time represented only 16% of the state’s population.
More than 6,180 cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, have been reported in Moore County since the start of the pandemic. About 1,283 of these cases, or 22%, are linked to residents aged 65 and over.
DHHS said about 4,885 people received the first dose of the vaccine in Moore County on Monday. The second shot was delivered to around 640 people.
After older adults, the next online groups for immunization include essential frontline workers of all ages and healthcare workers of all ages, who they work directly with COVID-19 patients.
