FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) – Health officials issued an opinion after two patients contracted dengue fever in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
Officials confirmed that one case of the disease had been confirmed in Broward and one in Miami-Dade. This is the first confirmed case at Broward this year and the fourth confirmed case at Miami-Dade.
Previous cases of the disease were confirmed in Miami-Dade County last month.
Dengue fever is usually contracted in the Caribbean, but officials said the alarming thing about these new cases is that Broward's patient was bitten and shot in South Florida.
"The fear is that if the mosquito is still free and bites another person, it is also possible that he contracts dengue," said Dr. Jason Mansour, deputy medical director of Broward Health Medical Center.
Health officials urged residents to stay alert and pay close attention to the following symptoms:
- fever
- Severe headache
- eye pain
- muscle, joint and bone pain
- nausea and vomiting
- unusual bleeding
Health officials said these symptoms tended to be mild at first, but that they could be life threatening if they were not treated.
"It's important because the severe form of dengue fever can be fatal. This can be quickly fatal, "said Mansour. "It can be fatal in a day or two. If you experience this type of symptoms after being bitten by a mosquito, bleeding or hemorrhagic symptoms, it is important to recognize it and to go immediately to the emergency department. . "
Residents are advised to take basic precautions to limit exposure to mosquitoes, for example by draining stagnant water where they could breed.
It is also recommended to wear a mosquito repellent with DEET or long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.
