Health officials are warning of a fungal “superbug” outbreak in Dallas and Washington, DC, which appears to be resistant to treatment.
the The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Thursday that there had been outbreaks of the fungus Candida auris at a nursing home in DC and at two hospitals in Dallas, The Associated Press reported.
Three cases in DC and two cases in Dallas were resistant to the three main classes of drugs.
The two Dallas patients who had drug-resistant cases died and a DC patient died from a similar case.
“This is really the first time that we are starting to see a rallying of resistance” and that patients are infecting each other, said Meghan Lyman, CDC chief medical officer, according to the AP.
The cases were seen from January to April and investigators found the fungus spread from person to person.
There have been more cases since April and the outbreak is still ongoing, according to the CDC, but cases have yet to be reported.
The fungus has been known for years, but there is new evidence that it can spread from person to person.
