A recent study found that a plant-based diet high in whole foods can help protect against COVID-19.
And the astounding results indicate that those who followed a “high-quality” healthy vegan diet were both less likely to catch the virus and less likely to be hospitalized with it.
Complete plant-based diet
Top researchers at Havard Medical School and King’s College London have collected data from nearly 600,000 people.
They asked respondents to complete a detailed questionnaire on what they ate before and during the pandemic.
Next, the researchers formed a “food quality score” from the overall nutritional value of what they typically ate.
Those with a high-quality score contained swathes of whole plant-based foods, from whole-grain fruits and vegetables. Plus, the top-rated diets contained fewer processed foods and refined carbohydrates.
Poor quality diets were consistent with a higher risk of developing COVID-19. “This is the first time that diet has been shown to reduce the risk of developing the disease,” they say.
COVID-19 study
The study was part of the ZOE COVID Symptom Study app, a non-profit program that helps COVID-19 research.
It proclaims itself as the largest ongoing study on the disease, working closely with King’s College London.
Severity of the disease
Another recent study also found that vegan diets can reduce the severity of COVID-19. He followed healthcare workers in six countries who had been “substantially” exposed to the virus.
Posted in BMJ, he also assessed the link between diet and disease.
Those who followed a plant-based diet had a 73% chance of developing moderate to severe severity of COVID-19.
However, those who followed “low-carb, high-protein diets” had a greater likelihood of moderate to severe COVID-19.
