Canadian health officials said on Friday that data suggests reported cases of rare heart inflammation were relatively higher after Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine compared to Pfizer / BioNTech injections.

The data also indicated that heart inflammation occurs more often in adolescents and adults under the age of 30, and more often in men.

The Public Health Agency of Canada press release says the majority of those affected suffered from relatively mild illness and recovered quickly.

The risk of heart complications, including heart inflammation, has been shown to be significantly increased after COVID-19 infections, with the risks being higher after infection than after vaccination, the statement said.

The benefits of mRNA injections in preventing COVID-19 continue to outweigh the risks, US, EU and World Health Organization regulators have said.
