Welcome to “Good Morning, Illini Nation,” your daily dose of college basketball news from Illini writer and AP Top 25 voter Scott Richey. He will offer information on Brad Underwood’s team every morning:

Kofi Cockburn’s return to Illinois for the 2021-22 season means that the domestic spotlight will sometimes turn to Champaign again. On Tuesday, that meant a conversation with Andy Katz of the Big Ten Network.

Here’s some of what Cockburn had to say …

On what he likes about the Big Ten: “Definitely the level of competition. Every night you play against a good opponent – an opponent who can beat you. You have to bring your ‘A’ game at all times.”

On supporting students: “They have to lock themselves in the culture, man. I see some of them doing that right now. They come to football games and support football, and volleyball games.… They are going to have a lot of fun. They are really going to experience college basketball this year. “

On the leadership role with the team: “Keep doing what I do. Keep working hard. Keep trusting my teammates, bonding with them and showing them that I care.”
