Wednesday’s COVID update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 783 new cases and 10 deaths.
The newly reported deaths bring the state’s total to 6,390 during the pandemic. Of those deaths, 62.8% (4,019) were long-term care residents, with three in 10 reported on Wednesday.
As of February 14, the state reported that 695,629 people had received at least 1 dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 246,431 people had completed the two doses of vaccine necessary for the vaccines to have maximum effect.
MDH has a public dashboard for tracking vaccine progress in Minnesota, and you can view it here.
Two new variants of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Minnesota, including what was the first known case of the Brazil P.1 variant in the United States. This case concerns a Minnesotan who traveled to Brazil. There are 8 confirmed cases of variant B.1.1.7. The two new strains are believed to be more transmissible.
Hospitalizations
Until February 16, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 314 – the lowest since September 24. Of those hospitalized, 54 were in intensive care and 260 were receiving non-resuscitation treatment.
Statewide, 179 intensive care beds were available. During the November push, the state had fewer than 100 intensive care beds available. The number of beds available depends on the number of staff available, so the totals are constantly changing.
Test and positivity rate
The 783 positive results in Wednesday’s update came from a total of 22,160 completed tests, creating a daily test positivity rate of 3.53%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 3.17%. That’s about the same rate Minnesota had in September before an increase in the number of cases pushed the rate above 15% in November.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percent positive rate (total positives divided by total tests completed) of less than 5% for at least two weeks is necessary to safely reopen the economy. 5% is based on total positives divided by total tests.
