Holidays can be a bit difficult on the International Space Station. Astronauts are away from friends and family, and sometimes they have to work on vacation like they did this July 4th while Americans were celebrating on Earth.
But vacations can also be fun, and that is clearly what happened Wednesday, July 14, when French astronaut Thomas Pesquet of the European Space Agency went all out for his American, Russian and Japanese teammates on the space station.
“During a 6-month service mission to the Space Station, we have two to three days off, and since July 4 fell on a Sunday, July 14 was the second best choice,” Pesquet wrote about of the French National Day in space. .

In a series of photos, Pesquet shared a slice of French life aboard the space station, as he and his six teammates wore T-shirts to celebrate France. He even cooked a French themed meal, with a photo showing Pesquet browsing a menu written in French with translations into English.
“I contributed French food, flags and stereotypes (no real croissant though, too bad… although I have a unique croissant patch, courtesy of our SpaceX instructors), and everyone brought their good mood at the party. “

Pesquet seemed a little disappointed that he couldn’t have a real croissant in space for the day, but he seemed happy with a patch given to him by SpaceX, which launched the French astronaut and three teammates ( NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide) at the station in April.
The International Space Station is currently home to seven space travelers from four different space agencies. In addition to Pesquet (from the European Space Agency), Hoshide (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and Kimbrough and McArthur from NASA, the stations’ Expedition 65 crew include Russian cosmonauts Pyotrevo and Oleg Novitskiy from Roscosmos.
