Tuesday’s COVID-19 update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 625 new cases and one new death. To be clear, the 625 cases include data submitted to the health department from Saturday to Monday, so it’s three days of data, not one.
The death toll in the state is 7,639 since the start of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 58.8% (4,492) were long-term care residents.
The figures released on Monday are based on data from Friday, with the weekend figures due to be released on Tuesday, as MDH no longer releases data updates on weekends.
As of July 15, the state reported that 3,112,360 people had received at least 1 dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 2,963,538 people had completed their vaccine series.
The percentage of the population of Minnesota who received at least one injection, by age group:
- 12-15: 40%
- 16-17: 51%
- 18-49: 58%
- 50-64: 72%
- 65+: 91%
- Total population: 56%

Hospitalizations
Until July 19, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 109 (up from 101 reported on Monday). Of those hospitalized, 25 were in intensive care and 84 were receiving non-ICU treatment.
Hospital admissions involving COVID patients in Minnesota fell to 223 on March 7 before rising to 699 on April 14. Since that peak in mid-April, numbers have fallen, dropping to 440 on May 17 and now hovering around 100.
Tests and positivity rate
The 625 positive results in Tuesday’s update came from 25,252 completed tests, creating a test positivity rate of 2.47%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 1.99%, which increases as the Delta variant spreads, having recently been below 1%.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percent positive rate (total positives divided by total tests performed) of less than 5% for at least two weeks is needed to safely reopen the economy. This 5% cutoff is based on the total number of positives divided by the total number of tests.

- Deaths: 7,639 – 422 of which “probable *” (compared to 7,638)
- Patients no longer requiring isolation: 599,037 (instead of 598,455)
* Probable deaths are patients who died after testing positive using the COVID-19 antigen test, which is considered less accurate than the more common PCR test.
