STRAIT – The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan rose to 605,778 on Friday, including 15,737 deaths, state officials report.

The state of Michigan announced on Friday that all residents aged 16 and over would become eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine on April 5, nearly a month before the May 1 date promised by President Joe Biden.

People aged 16 to 49 with certain medical conditions or disabilities will be eligible starting March 22, when people aged 50 to 64 can start getting vaccinated following a previous announcement. Two days later, on March 24, a federally-selected regional mass vaccination site will open at Ford Field in Detroit to administer an additional 6,000 doses per day for two months.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced that the first case of variant B.1.351 of COVID-19 has been identified in a child in Jackson County.

The health department has not specified how the boy became infected, but a case investigation is underway to determine close contacts and if there are any other associated cases.

This new variant was originally detected in South Africa in October 2020 and shares some mutations with the B117 variant. The first case of the B117 variant – originally detected in the UK – has been identified in Washtenaw County.

The state of Michigan is expanding its Covid-19 vaccine plan to include residents 50 and over, Local 4 learned.

Starting Monday, March 8, all Michigan residents aged 50 and over with pre-existing health conditions or disabilities will be eligible to schedule an appointment for the COVID-19 vaccine, Gov. Gretchen whitmer mentionned.

Family members of caregivers and guardians caring for children with special health care needs will also be able to receive the vaccine starting Monday.

“The more safe and effective vaccine we can get out of people, the faster we can get back to a sense of normalcy,” Whitmer said. “I urge all eligible Michiganders to obtain one of the three COVID-19 vaccines to protect you, your family and your community.”

Later this month

On March 22, all Michiganders aged 50 and over will become eligible, Local 4 learned.

More than 40% of Michiganders aged 65 and over have been vaccinated, according to the state.

“More than 2.3 million doses of safe and effective COVID vaccines have been administered in Michigan, and we know more vaccines are coming to the state,” said Dr. Joneigh khaldun, medical director and deputy head of health at MDHHS. “We are pleased to expand the eligibility to more people to be vaccinated as we continue to focus on those most vulnerable and most at risk of serious illness from COVID-19.”

The state of Michigan has relaxed its COVID-19 restrictions on bars and restaurants, including the capacity limit and nighttime curfew.

On Tuesday March 2, Gov. Gretchen whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced that restrictions on indoor dining have been revised.

Starting Friday, March 5, Michigan restaurants and bars will be allowed to fill up to 50% of their capacity, with a maximum of 100 people, according to the state.

“I am proud that we can take this positive step without compromising public health,” said Whitmer.

Since February 1, restaurants have been capped at 25% of their capacity. From mid-November to the end of January, no indoor meals were allowed in bars or restaurants.

The number of confirmed cases of a more contagious variant of COVID-19 in Michigan has increased by more than 100 this week, suggesting there is an “undetected spread” in the community.

Dr Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, said the state has confirmed 422 cases of the COVID-19 B117 variant.

This number has increased from 314 cases identified six days earlier (February 24).

Through a partnership with SMART, Macomb County is offering a new vaccination location in Sterling Heights.

The vaccination site is at Sterling Heights Senior Center on Utica Road, between Schoenherr and Van Dyke roads.

Appointments are mandatory. Residents and eligible workers can call the SMART Macomb Vaccine line at 586-421-6579.

Wayne County has announced that it will open several vaccination clinics for residents 65 and older.

Vaccination clinics will begin on February 23, according to County Director Warren Evans.

“I am happy that Wayne County is now able to start vaccinating seniors,” Evans said. “I know everyone is anxious to get back to normal in a safe way. Our team is working hard to ensure that all of our residents can get vaccinated against COVID as quickly as the vaccine is available. “

There are no walk-in appointments and seniors must make an appointment by calling the site number in their community.
