Here’s your first look at Duke Nukem Begins canceled by Gearbox

Gregor Punchatz shared a video of a vertical slice CG demo of a canceled Duke Nukem game, Duke Nukem Begins. According to Punchatz, Gearbox started working on this Duke Nukem game in 2008. However, and without the public knowing anything, the company decided to cancel it.

As Punchatz put it:

“In 2008, while I was working for the right folks at Janimation in Dallas Tx, we were hired by Gearbox to create a vertical slice (an animated version of what the game will look like) for the game ‘Duke Nukem Begins’, a History of Duke origin.

I led this project, as the director of Janimation, and did a lot of the character development, including the design and modeling of Duke. We put everything we had to make the most awesome cutscene Janimation has ever created. But unfortunately, we learned that Gearbox canceled the game due to legal issues with Duke Nukem at the time.

At first glance, Duke Nukem Begins would offer a cooperative mode with up to four players. It would also be a third person shooter (instead of an FPS). Naturally, the game would also include most of the weapons and enemies from Duke Nukem 3D.

Now I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t really sound like a Duke Nukem game to me. So yeah, I’m not that upset about its cancellation.

Go ahead and take a look!
