EDINBURG – The health department of Hidalgo County announced that the number of mumps cases had reached 39 confirmed cases.
Health and Social Services Director Eddie Olivarez reported that some of the cases were related to the original epidemic.
"With the incubation period going from 14 to 24 days before the onset of symptoms, this increase was predictable," said Olivarez. "This can be considered the second wave."
Olivarez warns that vaccinated people can still contract the virus, but will have less severe symptoms.
Local mother, Lori De Santos, said she was horrified when she received an email from Weslaco ISD, indicating that the district had been affected by mumps.
"It's worrying, you know, I made sure my son's class kids … I asked him how are your friends going and have they been vaccinated," De Santos said. .
Those who are not vaccinated are encouraged to see their doctor to receive the vaccine.
The county says if you think mumps should be tested by a doctor.
