Fifty-seven deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the past week (September 8 to 14), the highest weekly total during this current outbreak of the pandemic.
This is more than triple the 18 deaths from COVID-19 reported in the previous seven days (September 1-7) and more than the 49 reported the week before (August 25-31).
The new deaths occurred between August 19 and September 13, and 11 (19%) of the 57 people who died were fully vaccinated. The deceased were 34 men and 23 women; 54 had underlying health conditions, one did not, and two had a pending medical history.
Of the 57 deaths, 15 were aged 80 or over, 11 in their sixties, 22 in their sixties, four in their fifties, two in their forties and three in their thirties. A total of 3,983 San Diegan residents have died from COVID-19 in the region.
“These deaths are very unfortunate. Our condolences go out to their family and friends, ”said Wilma J. Wooten, MD, MPH, county public health official. “COVID-19 vaccines are widely available and can prevent San Diego from becoming seriously ill, hospitalized, or worse, dying.”
COVID-19: a pandemic of the unvaccinated
COVID-19 continues to be an unvaccinated pandemic in San Diego County.
According to the County Health and Human Services Agency’s latest COVID-19 Watch report, as of March 1, 2021, more than 96% of hospitalizations (2,150) and almost 89% of deaths (208) have occurred in people who do not are not fully vaccinated. In comparison, the report, which covers data up to Sept. 11, shows that 75, or 3.4% of fully vaccinated San Diego’s had to be hospitalized and 11.1%, or 26, died.
Additionally, 81.3% (65,635) of COVID-19 cases have occurred in San Diegans who are not fully vaccinated, compared to 19.7% (15,138) cases in people who are fully vaccinated.
In the past 30 days, 21,741 cases and 548 hospitalizations (2.5% of the total) occurred in people not fully vaccinated, compared with 5,587 cases and only nine hospitalizations (0.2% of the total) for people fully vaccinated.
“Although we have seen a higher number of breakthrough infections, almost all deaths and hospitalizations occur in San Diego that are not fully immunized,” Wooten said. “The COVID-19 vaccine is the best tool we have to get out of this pandemic. Protect yourself and others. Get vaccinated now.

Cases, case rate and tests:
- 742 cases of COVID-19 were reported to the county on September 14. The region’s total is now 346,934.
- San Diego County’s case rate per 100,000 population is 33.6 overall, 13.9 for those fully vaccinated, and 59.3 for those not fully vaccinated.
- 17,728 tests were reported to the county on September 14 and the percentage of new positive cases was 4.2%.
- The 14-day rolling percentage of positive cases among tests is 4.5%.
Community outbreaks:
- 56 new community epidemics have been confirmed in the last seven days (September 8-14): 17 in TK-12 primary schools, 10 in businesses, eight in restaurants / bars, four in religious denominations, three in distribution warehouses, three in government facilities, two in catering establishments, two in hotel / resort / spa establishments, two in daycare / preschool / daycare facilities, one in fitness facility / gym, one in a service facility, one in a health care facility, one in a retail facility, and one in a day camp.
- The trigger for community epidemics is greater than seven in a 7-day period.
