The historic stained glass windows in the mansion of the Wildwood Cultural Center, located at 7645 Little Mountain Road in Mentor, will soon have a new luster for visitors to enjoy.
At Mentor’s Town Council meeting on October 5, town leaders approved the restoration and relocation of lead stained glass to the English Tudor-style mansion, which was built in the early 1900s. Plans call for restoration of windows throughout the mansion, including the front vestibule and adjacent living room, dining room, and several sets of interior doors.
Any missing window hardware will be custom made to match the characteristics of the mansion already in place.
“Lead stained glass will be restored to preserve the historic value of the windows, and window restoration is an important part of the 2019 master plan for central Wildwood,” said Parks and Recreation Director Kenneth Kaminski.
The city will enter into a contract with Whitney Vitrail Studio, Inc., based in Cleveland, for catering. Kaminski told the board that the studio has submitted the best bid to complete the work and that the contract will total $ 48,300 for the removal, restoration and reinstallation of the windows.
Ward 1 Councilor Sean Blake confirmed to Kaminski at the council meeting that the windows will remain true to their original appearance after the studio’s restoration process, without any unnecessary alterations.
“When they’re done, they’ll be vintage restorations, so they’ll go back to how they were when they were new – there are no changes to that, or to modern materials,” said Blake. “They do the plumb job and they clean them, so we’ll really notice a difference when these are put back in place, and that will restore the structural integrity of each window.”
While the windows are under construction, the window openings will be temporarily barricaded.
