A haircut at home resulted in the coronavirus death of a Chicago couple who took every precaution possible before contracting the deadly virus, according to their distraught son.
Joe Bruno said his parents, Mike and Carol Bruno, died from COVID-19 just nine days apart after the couple, married for 59 years, were infected during a November 20 visit to their apartment so that he can have his hair cut. sister.
“We never thought that would happen to our family – and that’s what happened,” Bruno told WLS-TV on Thursday. “This virus is really ruthless and just attacks in a really vicious way.”
Bruno’s sister works in a salon and arranged to get him a haircut right before Thanksgiving at his house. She had tested negative for the virus before the home visit and quarantined three or four days in advance, Bruno recalls.
“I needed a haircut and she said, ‘Well why don’t you come and cut your hair so you don’t have to walk into the salon?’” He said. at the station.
Joe’s sister took her mother, Carol, for the haircut, which only lasted 30 to 40 minutes, he said.
“I didn’t kiss my mother, I didn’t hug my sister,” Bruno said. “My sister cut my hair, she was masked, all the windows were open. We were left behind in my apartment and then they left.
But later that evening, Bruno’s sister felt sick and began to experience symptoms of the virus about three days later. Their mother, meanwhile, was admitted to hospital on Thanksgiving Day, just six days after the fateful haircut, CNN reported.
Her condition initially improved and she was released that week, but then returned to the hospital and was put on a ventilator. Mike Bruno, who did not go with his wife and daughter to his son’s apartment, contracted the virus about two weeks after Thanksgiving, Joe Bruno told CNN.
Carol Bruno, 79, died on December 14, according to her obituary.
“Carol was a strong woman who took care of her family and overcame many challenges throughout her life,” the obit read. “She loved to cook, was a devoted wife, an amazing mother and a kind wife.
Nine days after his wife’s death, Mike succumbed to the virus, CNN reported. He was on a ventilator when his wife died, their son recalled.
“I think what gives us peace is knowing that my father didn’t know my mother was dead,” Bruno told WLS-TV. “Knowing that they are gone within 10 days of each other is such a beautiful thing. And you know, I would give anything to bring them back, but I’m so happy they’re together again.
But Bruno, who has also since tested positive for COVID-19, along with his brother, sister and husband, said he regretted his decision to have his hair cut.
“If I had made that sacrifice and, you know, hadn’t spent, you know, 30 to 40 minutes with my mom – they would still be there,” Bruno told WLS-TV.
