SAN RAMON, Calif. (KGO) – The wild pigs start again, this time in San Ramon.
A homeowner uploaded a video of ABC7 presenter Dan Ashley there from his front lawn being chewed on by foraging animals.
“I heard a scream. I went out and just couldn’t believe what I saw, ”said owner Ted Hunting, who told us his wife saw him for the first time on Sunday morning. They say it looked like someone had plowed the lawn before or turned the whole land over.
“You can actually see the holes in the ground, with their tusks, where they dug the grass,” Hunting said.
Wild boars or pigs had descended into the Hunting yard during the night, probably from the nearby hills.
This is a phenomenon that played out a year ago, in Moraga and San Ramon, where wild animals interfere with the domestic backyard in a way that can cause serious damage.
“Their food resources will start to dry up,” said Ken Paglia, public information officer for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “So they start to forage for food and water, and inevitably they end up in people’s yards and gardens.”
All the homeowner can do is try to ward off the next attack by putting up a fence or netting around the property, or removing the grass or garden altogether.
Some people even hire a licensed trapper or try to hunt the animals, but this requires a depredation permit issued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “If a wild pig or a group of pigs destroy your property, you can contact us on our website and one of our employees will contact you to discuss the options,” Paglia said.
Ted Hunting has set up a green net, trying to keep the boars away and he will do one more thing. This reduces the watering of his lawn.
“Absolutely,” Hunting said. “We are reducing watering. It was a good wake-up call. “
This is a good thing, not only because of the drought, but also because there is nothing these animals love more than a green and damp lawn.
