WASHINGTON: The American unit of Honda Motor Co announced Wednesday the recall of 118,000 new US SUVs following reports of three injuries related to sudden deployments of airbags.

The Japanese manufacturer has announced its recall of the Honda CR-V 2019 to replace the flywheel cable harnesses and the additional restraint system cable reels after six unexpected deployments of the driver's airbag that took place without collision.

To date, there have been no reports of collisions, said the builder.

Metal burrs on the inside surface of the steering wheel could cause damage that could lead to a short circuit and overheating of the components, Honda said.

The question is distinct from a series of recalls that Honda has made over the past decade to replace more than 21 million defective Takata air bag inflators in about 12.9 million US vehicles that, according to Honda, were killed at 16 years old.

Honda also announced the recall of 19,000 US vehicles for which Takata inflator replacement kits were incorrectly installed before May 2018.
