INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Saturday marked 20 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks, and Hoosiers and other Americans honored the lives lost on that terrible day.
On September 11, nearly 3,000 people died. Nine of those lost lives were Hoosiers: Gary Bright, Katie McCloskey, Stacey Peak, and Karen Juday all perished in New York City. Lieutenant-General Timothy Maude, Colonel Canfield Boone, Major Stephen Long, Brenda Gibson and Eddie Dillard were killed in the Pentagon.
“Today we come together to keep this promise we all made to each other to never forget. Today is the story of 9/11, ”Maude’s widow Teri Maude said in a ceremony Saturday at the 9/11 Memorial in downtown Indianapolis.
At the memorial, Hoosiers re-dedicated the 9/11 memorial on Ohio Street, near state government buildings. The memorial was created 10 years ago with steel beams from the World Trade Center. Behind the beams, granite monuments detail the chronology of the events that occurred on September 11. The memorial has also been extended from its original location and now includes an 800-pound piece of Pentagon limestone.
Former Vice President Mike Pence, a Republican, said at the dedication: “Today we remember our deceased loved ones whose names are inscribed in this memorial and in memorials across the country. “
Republican Governor of Indiana Eric Holcomb also attended the event. “Two decades later, we still bow and still pray and still honor those we have lost. “
At the dedication, Pence also said that Hoosiers will never forget them. “The loss that you suffered that day and that you are still suffering, you cannot bear alone. Today a choir of millions of Americans is praying for you and your family, and we are with you.
