Hospital denies kidney transplant to unvaccinated woman: report

A Colorado hospital has taken a woman off a waiting list for a kidney transplant because she was not vaccinated against COVID-19, according to reports.

According to Fox News, kidney patient Leilani Lutali and her donor, Jaimee Fougner, are not vaccinated. Lutali is in stage five of kidney failure and has not received the vaccine, citing too many unknowns. Fougner did not get it for religious reasons. Both have been removed from the list of transplants

“I’m here, ready to be a direct donor for her. It doesn’t affect any other patient on the transplant list,” Fougner told CBS4, a local news station. “How can I sit here and allow them to kill my friend when I have a perfectly good kidney and can save her life?” “

All transplant recipients and their living donors should be vaccinated before the procedure to protect the health of patients, the hospital reportedly said.

“I said I will sign a medical discharge,” Lutali said. “I have to sign a waiver for the transplant itself anyway, freeing them from anything that could go wrong. It’s surgery, it’s invasive. I’m signing a waiver for my life. I don’t know. why can’t I sign a waiver for the COVID shot. “

In August, Lutali said the hospital had informed her that getting a vaccine would not be a prerequisite for getting the transplant. Policy changed following the approval of Pfizer-BioNtech’s vaccine.

Lutali and Fougner study hospitals in neighboring states, including Nevada and New Mexico.
