After a freezer containing valuable Moderna COVID-19 vaccines requiring refrigeration broke at a Seattle hospital, medical staff rushed to vaccinate as many people as possible at clinics at Seattle University and the University of Washington.
It turned out to be one of the craziest vaccine deployments ever as medics rushed to use the vaccine on people before it expired on Thursday night and Friday morning, reported the Seattle Times.
βI got a call tonight at 9 am and learned that a Kaiser freezer had broken down and could we help vaccinate people before the doses expired at 5:30 am?β Jenny Brackett, assistant administrator at the University of Washington, told the Seattle Times.
Between the northwest and Montlake locations of UW Medical Center, they had 800 unexpected doses to administer.
Swedish non-profit health system tweeted Thursday evening, 588 appointments for the Moderna coronavirus vaccine were available from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.
The cause of the freezer malfunction at Kaiser Permanente was not immediately clear.
βIt was late, it was being watched – someone saw it and quickly thought about bringing it to someone who could have it administered,β said Cassie Sauer, president of the Washington State Hospital Association.
Sauer said no doses were unused and that 1,600 total doses had been administered across the sites.
