A New York hospital plans to stop giving birth later this month because too many maternity workers have quit rather than getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
Lewis County Health System General Manager Gerald R. Cayer announced at a Friday afternoon press conference that the maternity ward would be closed on September 25 until they could find enough vaccinated nurses to reopen it safely.
Cayer told reporters in Lowville, which is in an area known as the North Country of New York, that seven of the 30 people who quit the hospital were working in the maternity ward, according to the news site. NNY360.
Seven other maternity workers have not said whether or not they will receive their first vaccine by Sept. 27, a deadline set by the state for healthcare workers to be at least vaccinated, according to the website. ‘information.
The healthcare system has a higher than average percentage of its staff vaccinated, Cayer told reporters, with 464 of 650 employees vaccinated, or 73%.
But there are still 165 employees who have yet to share their decision with hospital management, WWNY news reported.
Medical services in five other departments may also need to be cut if more staff resign because they refuse to be vaccinated
“It’s just a crazy time,” Cayer said, according to NNY360, “It’s not just LCHS centric. Rural hospitals everywhere are really trying to figure out how we’re going to make it work.
“If you don’t have a staff, how do you provide the service? That’s what I’m going to talk about, ”Cayer said.
The health care system is one of only two county-owned hospitals remaining in the state and is the county’s largest employer.
