A tender moment between a Houston doctor and a COVID-19 patient has turned into a viral sensation showing the daily struggle of Americans battling COVID-19.

When Dr Joseph Varon of United Memorial Medical Center entered a patient’s room, he was struck by the pain and vulnerability on the man’s face and moved to comfort him. The patient took him in his arms and collapsed into the doctor’s arms.

The scene was captured by photographer Getty Go Nakamura and has since gone viral as a devastating emblem of the current moment. The photo has been shared by thousands of people on Twitter and in the media including ABC-7 and ABC-13.


“As I walked inside my unit, in one of the rooms, I see this elderly patient standing and crying,” Varon told Chron. “He was just crying and I comforted him. He then said, ‘I just want to be with my wife.’ “

Varon said Nakamura had often followed him to his unit at UMMC and took the image as he was comforting his patient.

“I gave him a hug and he really calmed down,” Varon said. “He really needed to have someone to give him a more hug, just to be close to him. It made a big difference. I’m trying to make him more human. He’s doing a lot better. It was so much better. moving for everyone. “
