Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo to hold COVID-19 briefing

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner are scheduled to hold a joint press conference on Wednesday after seeing an increase in the number of COVID-19. It’s unclear what they’ll say, but Houstonians are questioning the impact of any possible new restrictions in the region.

Hidalgo and Turner will be joined by Harris County Public Health Director of Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention Dr Sherri Onyiego and City of Houston Chief Medical Officer Dr David Persse.

“People are barely hanging on right now,” said Houstonian Jason Millis.

While new COVID-19 restrictions have just been announced that will impact Galveston and other counties in Southeast Texas, many are hopeful that this will not be the case in Houston.

“Everyone’s just trying to survive and it’s tough,” Sammie Tran said with Vietopia in southwest Houston.

Tran saw many friends shutting down and said it was heartbreaking. Another shutdown or reduction could force more to close their doors for good.

“When we ended up with take out, that wasn’t enough. We needed people to sit down and drink,” Tran said.

Cuchara in Montrose also hung on. They stretched out outside to give her customers peace of mind during dinner.

“It has been very difficult from the start. We have reduced a lot of working hours,” said Cuchara General Manager Lorena Tejeda.

Luckily, no one was let go, but it’s still a scary thought. Cuchara has lost around 40% of its business since the pandemic.
