By hiring former New England Patriots executive Nick Caserio to solve a slew of issues within the organization, the Houston Texans have created more with star quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Watson has offered his advice on potential GM candidates, but the Texans have neither considered nor consulted those approved by their franchise quarterback, league sources have told ESPN.
Additionally, the Texans did not notify Watson of their intention to hire Caserio and he found out about the hire on social media. This helped Watson take to Twitter that evening to post “some things never change …”
Watson’s feelings weren’t directed at Caserio, sources told ESPN, but rather were indicative of how business was being conducted by the Texans again.
Last offseason, Houston didn’t let Watson know that all-star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins would be traded, leading to some disappointment. Now that this has happened again, Watson would be immeasurably more bothered, sources told ESPN.
This time, Watson had met Texan owner Cal McNair on several occasions, sharing his thoughts on some highly recommended candidates, with Watson suggesting the team at least speak to them, sources told ESPN. He didn’t expect Houston to hire those he approved of, but he hoped the Texans would be respectful of the feelings of the group of his teammates he was trying to represent, sources told ESPN.
The Texans, however, did not act on their quarterback’s thoughts and loaded a hire that counted in a much smaller circle than the one Watson was trying to help, sources told ESPN.
Even though they didn’t want to go ahead with any of the nominees recommended by Watson, he at least wanted the opportunity to meet with the property’s finalists so he could offer his thoughts from the perspective of the player for the benefit of the team – then the Texans could hire whoever they wanted. The opportunity never presented itself.
Now the question is, what will the fallout be? The Texans clearly have an unhappy quarterback on their hands, as they welcome Caserio to their franchise to try and rebuild it. There has already been speculation that Watson might demand a trade, although the GM is just getting started and the team still does not have a head coach. If the team were to trade Watson, they would have to absorb a $ 22 million payroll tax, although they could recoup a draft pick and player bonus if they wanted.
But as Caserio arrives in Houston to clean up the mess, the mess is actually bigger due to the events surrounding his hiring. Now the Texans have a disillusioned franchise quarterback.
