How a battle with food poisoning allowed this man to lose 350 pounds

At age 33, Zach Moore was convinced that he was going to die. And really, as a smoker weighing as much as 500 pounds, he was probably right. Although he tried several times to regain his health, nothing worked. That is, until fate comes in and inflicts food poisoning resulting in a weight loss of 360 pounds.

It was not that Moore decided to be so fat. Who did it? But his story, like many others, began with a slow progression down the ladder. Moore explained that he lived all his adult life from packaged and fried foods. This unhealthy lifestyle only got worse when his wife became pregnant with their son.

"She ate for two and I ate for three," says Moore. But in December 2013, a few years after the birth of his son, Moore was found sitting with his family and reading a book to his child. At that time, he was suffering from hypertension and diabetes, which put him on the pathway to a heart attack or stroke. His wife took a video of the moment, which should have been happy. But when Moore watched the video, he was horrified by what he saw.

"That's where everything hit me," said Moore. "I was looking at my wife, I was looking at my child and I realized that I weighed 500 pounds and that people as fat do not live so long and I wanted to see my son grow up. but he did not even know where to begin. In the end, his take-away habit decided to take him for him.

"I've had food poisoning by eating chicken to orange at the time of the New Year," he says. "I ate all the container on my way home because I was fat and I liked to do it. And of course, I was the only one to get sick. No one else in the house fell ill. All week, Moore has suffered. It got so much worse that he was hospitalized for eight days. But there was a positive side effect: he was losing weight – quickly.

"It was a way of looking, but I thought: maybe it's a sign. The numbers are going in the right direction, "he said.

After feeling better, Moore decided it was time to finally give up some of his bad eating habits. He began by reducing his consumption of meat by eating only "birds and fish" and not red meat. Then he cut the processed foods. And, as he explains, he decided that everything he ate "had to come from the Earth".

In March 2014, Moore decided to take another step by submitting to gastric bypass surgery. Although his operation was not without complications, he managed to get out of it. The first day after the operation, Moore has gone through 42 stages. From there, he just kept walking.

Instead of setting up a hardcore workout routine, Moore remained true to his property and his city, shaking things up until he walked a few kilometers a day. After his surgery, Moore also stuck to a low caloric and high protein diet consisting of egg whites, lean meats and snacks such as cottage cheese.

"I pretty much said: it's my new life. That's me, "he says. "If I want to help my wife and my son, I have to help myself." Through these efforts, Moore has lost 300 pounds in a year.

Today, 38-year-old Moore, who weighs 152 pounds, resists while maintaining an active life every day. He throws all the televisions home and continues to walk every day. He tries to incorporate healthy foods and healthy routines that the rest of his family can also enjoy. But he still faces occasional struggles.

Moore underwent a multitude of corrective surgeries due to weight gain, including knee replacement surgery and protruding hernia. He also needs to work on other things, says Moore, like the way he sees himself in the mirror, his evolutionary relationship with food and even physical objects that his weight once ravaged.

"You leave a lot of darkness behind you," he says. "My bed broke, my sofa broke, the shocks on my car were hit. The life of this human is left behind and there are so many little things that it still takes even five years later to go back and clean up.

Even though he continues to lead these battles, Moore could not be happier with the result – a match triggered by a bad orange chicken dish. Regarding the other people who hold this position, Moore does not want to make speeches about calorie counting, the benefits of surgery or even a specific workout routine. Instead, he prefers to keep his simple advice: "Keep going."
