Gordon Hayward’s signing and trading saga is finally over.
Hayward is now a member of the Charlotte Hornets after signing a four-year, $ 120 million contract and being dealt by the Celtics, along with unprotected 2023 and 2024 second-round picks, with the Hornets. In return, the Celtics get a protected 2022 Charlotte top-55 second-round pick and a trade exception of around $ 28.5 million, which is the largest in NBA history.
The trade exception is the most valuable part of the deal for Boston. It’s based on Hayward’s freshman salary at Charlotte, which a league source says is $ 28.5 million, and it gives the Celtics essentially a near-maximum slot of pseudo-ceiling space that can be used to acquire players through trades or waiver requests.
