Shane Cole is 6 feet 2 inches tall and currently weighs 185 pounds. In 2017, after struggling with his weight for most of his life, he decided to change to preserve his health and that of his family. It's the story of his weight loss journey.

I grew up as an overweight child, munching without thinking, trying to calm my anxiety with food. Although I am very conscious of my weight, I never really felt like I could change. I still loved sport, especially hockey, but I had never felt that my weight was limiting me enough to make the change urgent.

I would be lying if I did not say that seeing results was the biggest motivator. I had deliberately forgotten how much I actually ate and when I started limiting my meals to 450-550 calories a day and 400 calories of snacks (totaling 1,900 to 2,000 calories a day), the weight began to melt. It was amazing to see these positive changes and even during the plateaus, I trusted the process, knowing that as long as I would focus on the number of calories ingested (CICO), I would get the desired results.

All positively snowballed. As my health improved physically, I had more mental clarity. It's hard to explain, but I felt like myself for the first time. The more I lost weight, the more energy I had and the more I wanted to test this new body. I played more hockey, I fell in love with the hike and I started to lift. The more I worked, the more I wanted to make sure these workouts meant something, so I did not want to eat those calories burned.

The biggest surprise for me is how much energy I have and how I can do things physically that I never thought I could do. Even something as simple as doing push-ups was part of the list of things I did not think I could do, but now I can achieve them. I can go out and run a 5k at will. I can play hockey for two hours or more in a row. For me, none of this was possible.

I try to stay active six to seven days a week, usually getting at least two nights of hockey and three days of strength training. Add to this a hike and a day of yoga / stretching. Every day, there is always something in my schedule. Through all this activity, I can actually eat more than 3,000 calories a day, which is a strange transition after focusing on a 2,000 calorie diet for so long.

<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "Maintenance"data-reactid =" 72 ">Maintenance

I have two main strategies that I try to adhere to every day. First, I always try to follow a philosophy of "No Zero Days" with nutrition and fitness. I would be lying if I said that I did not have days where I did not want to train or that I just wanted to gorge myself like crazy, but what I'm trying always to do each day is to make at least one positive step towards my goal. For example, if you do not want to train? Do it for five minutes, then you can stop. Most people will not stop smoking after the blood starts to pump during these five minutes.

Second, incorporate calorie tracking into your routine. This may be overwhelming at first, but one practice that has helped me through the process is to plan my meals for the next day, the night before. It takes 10 minutes, but it will help you stay on track and avoid having to follow each element throughout your busy days. Eliminate the uncertainties of losing weight. Trust thermodynamics.

I am now motivated to tweak my body and enjoy this new life. Looking back, I hate to think of all the years I lost in terrible conditions, but I can not do anything about it. What I can do is continue to set goals and challenge myself to improve my fitness, build muscle, improve the rink, and so on. In the long run, I want to be part of those 60 years that people watch and think, "Wow! How does he go on playing at this age?

It's always hard not to go crazy on cheat days from time to time, but one of the things I've improved is not to fight afterwards. All you can do in these cases is to get back to the horse the next day and stay below your calorie goals. A day is not enough to derail weeks of progress.

No day zero. You do not want to go to the gym? Just put on your tennis shoes and go out the door. You will be surprised at how much the hardest step is most often the first and once you take a small step in the right direction, you follow the rest of your workout.

Do not be afraid to change what you do to keep cool. Are you starting to worry about going to the gym? Start hiking or running. Tired of the same diet? Shake things up and try a new diet plan while meeting your calorie goals.

Love yourself, educate yourself and learn to love the process. Do not forget how good it is to take positive action. Do research on your methodology and do not join fad diets or workouts – and do not be afraid to ask for help along the way. Adapt yourself to find a sustainable lifestyle that you love and do it for yourself and for no one else. You will be surprised at how much fitness and nutrition can become a hobby.
