The Yankees were hoping the oblique injury was not serious after Saturday's win over Kansas City.
They should have known better.
Aaron Judge was placed on the 10-day wounded list Sunday with what Aaron Boone called "quite significant tension".
And although the manager does not anticipate any delay in the judge's absence, Boone said it would take some time before the good defensive player does anything.
"The next few weeks will only be part of the healing process," Boone said.
The judge left Saturday's game in the bottom of the sixth round, if he injured himself by hitting a single on the right. He was clearly uncomfortable when he ran for the first time and was removed from the game after a brief visit from coach Steve Donohue. He became the 14th player on the IL by the Yankees this season. There are currently 13 players in the American league, only CC Sabathia is back, although Gary Sanchez is expected Wednesday in Anaheim.
Thairo Estrada was recalled on Sunday from Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre to occupy Judge's place, in part because the infielder was the only player among the 40 players in good health.
Boone was not expecting other changes within the formation and insisted that he was OK, with Tyler Wade playing the role of fourth team player. Wade replaced Judge on the right Saturday, while Clint Frazier started Sunday with Brett Gardner in the center and Mike Tauchman on the left.
"We are comfortable with him," said Boone about Wade.
As for possible substitutes, Aaron Hicks, a low back wounded, will travel to Tampa to continue his rehab. Boone said that he should soon participate in re-education games.
Giancarlo Stanton (biceps) "could potentially go fast," although Stanton said on Saturday that he had not yet started hitting the field.
And for those who wonder, Jacoby Ellsbury stays in Tampa, not doing much.

This is the third major injury suffered by the judge in four major league seasons.
On September 13, 2016, he was suffering from a straight oblique tension at the end of the season. He also missed 45 games last season due to a broken wrist after being hit by a throw on July 26. The judge remained healthy in 2017 and played 155 games.
