This year’s 2021 Golden Globes telecast will be produced virtually – and, for the first time, from both coasts.
Beyond that lies the great unknown.
Sunday’s show – co-hosted by Tina Fey at the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center and Amy Poehler at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, respectively – airs at 8 p.m. on NBC. Producers have been working behind the scenes to tailor the Pandemic Era broadcast to its virtual realities, which involves far more than the lack of live celebrity audiences at either site.
“You can expect a starry night,” Barry Adelman, one of the show’s executive producers, told The Post. “With all of the nominees who will participate, as well as the presenters who will come to both sites, we will have a star that will present each award – live.”
Awkwafina, Cynthia Erivo, Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger and Kristen Wiig are among the celebrities who have been announced as presenters of the 2021 Golden Globes so far.
“Overall, I think we have about 150 stars involved right now, and bookings are increasing every day,” he said. “The biggest challenge has been trying to recreate the magic of being together in one place. However, our technical team and director, Louis J. Horvitz, have come up with a number of creative and innovative ideas that will capture some of the intimacy and spontaneity that audiences love about the Globes.
“I think you will see things that you have never seen before in any virtual awards show.”
(An insider told the Post that it’s possible for viewers to see a “virtual bar element” on the broadcast, with nominees interacting with each other remotely.)
Adelman broke down different elements of the broadcast, giving viewers a taste of what they’ll see on Sunday night.
Fey and Poehler will be socially left behind
Co-hosts will be separated by approximately 2,700 miles – but there will be additional security measures at the Beverly Hilton and Rainbow Room. “We are taking all health precautions,” he said. “As you’ve probably guessed, we have strict testing and social distancing protocols in both locations and with the exception of the speaking performers on stage, everyone else will need to wear face masks and maintain social distancing. . “
There will be no celebrities in the audience
There won’t be any casseroles for celebrities to clumsily laugh at the monologue jokes – but there will be everyday heroes. “Due to COVID protocols, we only have room for a small audience in each room. We decided to fill it with a mix of frontline workers and essential workers. “
Expect to see familiar elements of the telecast

There are two things I learned from working with Tina and Amy: I don’t advise them how to tell jokes and I don’t consult them on what to wear. I know they will handle both expertly.
All nominees will have a speaking time
“Winning a Golden Globe is a career defining moment, and we wanted to make sure the nominees can accept the honor, wherever they are. Since security protocols do not allow large gatherings [at either venue], we sent camera kits to our nominees, so they can stream from their homes. This will give everyone the opportunity to join us wherever they are in the world.
