How to set custom wallpapers on WhatsApp

Want custom backgrounds for your many WhatsApp conversations? It might seem cumbersome, but adding wallpapers to your chats allows you to visually remind yourself which group you’re talking to. And, of course, it animates WhatsApp from drab (but delicious) Grey you might otherwise appreciate.

To get started, update WhatsApp through Google Play or the App Store. Launch the app, enter a conversation or group, and tap the name of the person you’re chatting with with (or group name) at the top of the discussion. This will bring up the conversation settings and you’ll see a brand new option to tap: Wallpaper and sound.

Press the Choose a new wallpaper option, and you will see a variety of options integrated with WhatsApp which you can choose. You can also allow the app to access your photos and select whatever is there., if you want customize your chats even more. Better yet, you can preview any wallpaper you are considering; just tap on it and you will see what it would look like under a sample conversation.

Once you’ve made your decision, tap Together, and your new wallpaper will be ready to go.

Remember, you only set up a wallpaper for one conversation this way. If you want to set up a default wallpaper for all of your chats – a wallpaper that is only replaced when you perform the aforementioned steps to select a specific wallpaper for a chat – you’ll need to visit settings of WhatsApp via the icon at the bottom right. corner of the screen. From there, tap Cats, then Cat wallpaper, and you will follow the same process to choose a wallpaper for all your new and existing conversations.

There’s another funny little quirk about this process indicate: If you’re smart, you’ve probably noticed that WhatsApp asks you to choose a “[mode]”Wallpaper” in these windows, “Light” or “Dark”. The wallpapers you select for your conversations only apply when you are using that particular theme. If you switch to Light from Dark, or vice versa, you will be able to select wallpapers for this theme too.

This reasoning makes sense to me, as you will probably only want brighter wallpapers when using a lighter theme or darker wallpapers for a darker theme.. It would be great to be able to set both at the same time without having to change the theme first, but that is the way WhatsApp does it.
