WhatsApp is one of the best messaging apps out there, and it’s finally getting a cross-device connection. The feature is now available for beta users on Android and iOS, and it lets you sign in to four devices at the same time – and you don’t have to stay signed in to your phone to send messages. This is a big deal for the platform, and the feature is now being rolled out to beta users around the world.
What’s particularly interesting is that the functionality is end-to-end encrypted, which gives you the same level of security as the default app. Here’s how to get started with WhatsApp multi-device and what you can do with this feature.
How to sign up for WhatsApp cross-device
- Open WhatsApp.
- Hit it Presentation menu (three vertical dots).

Tap Linked devices.

- Tap Join the beta.

Joining the beta will unlink connected devices. Tap Carry on to join the multi-device beta.
Source: Android Central - Once you have joined the beta, you can connect a new device to your account by pressing the button Link a device button. Before doing so, go to web.whatsapp.com on the target device.
- Enter your phone password or biometric information and use the QR code reader to scan the QR code of WhatsApp Web on the target device.

Your device should now be linked to your account, and you can use WhatsApp on this device even without being logged into your phone.

Can I use my WhatsApp account on multiple phones?
There are some limitations with the implementation of multi-device connection by WhatsApp. First of all, the functionality is limited to a single phone, so there is no way for you to use your WhatsApp account on multiple phones at once. You’ll need to register new devices with your phone – just like you did before – and the only change this time around is that you don’t need to maintain a connection with that phone to send messages. Finally, if you don’t use WhatsApp on your phone for more than 14 days, the devices you’ve signed into will be unpaired.

As someone who switches between the best Android phones, I couldn’t wait to use WhatsApp on multiple phones at once, just like Telegram. But it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer for this particular feature to appear on the service.
Multi-device is an opt-in program and is in limited beta, and the feature itself is only available to those using the beta version of WhatsApp. If you’re on the beta and don’t see the setting to join the cross-device beta, you’ll have to wait a bit; the service is deployed in phases.
What does not work on WhatsApp multi-device
As WhatsApp has just started rolling out multiple devices, some features are not yet working on the service. Here is the full list:
- Live location display on companion devices.
- Pin chats on WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
- Join, view and reset group invitations from WhatsApp Web and Desktop. You will need to use your phone instead.
- Sending a message or calling someone who is using a very old version of WhatsApp on their phone will not work from your linked device.
- Calls from Portal or WhatsApp Desktop to linked devices that are not enrolled in the multi-device beta.
- Other WhatsApp accounts on your portal will only work if those accounts have joined the cross-device beta.
- WhatsApp Business users cannot change their company name or labels from WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
