iOS 14.4 has arrived for all users and one of the new features is the ability to classify your Bluetooth accessories as a specific type of device. Find out why and how to label Bluetooth devices on iPhone and iPad as speaker, headphones, hearing aids, and car stereo.
Beyond the sheer inherent value that some will find in properly labeled Bluetooth devices on iPhone and iPad, Apple says the new feature will do two main things.
First, correctly identifying your devices will provide enhanced audio notifications. Second, Apple notes that “Specifying the device type can ensure that your headphones’ audio level measurements are accurate.”

With iOS 14.4, there are five categories for labeling your Bluetooth devices:
- Car radio
- Headphone
- Hearing aid
- Speaker
- Other
How to tag Bluetooth devices on iPhone and iPad
- Make sure you have updated your iPhone / iPad to iOS 14.4
- Head toward Settings> Bluetooth
- Press the “I” icon next to a connected Bluetooth device
- Tap Device type
- If not correct, choose a label
As AirPods are already known by iOS as headphones, there is no option to change the Bluetooth tag.
