Amazon has just opened a drugstore, allowing shoppers to order prescription drugs like clothes or home supplies.

Amazon Pharmacy, which launched on Tuesday, offers to deliver most generic and brand-name prescription drugs to most US customers with no delivery charges. Doctors can call prescription orders directly from Amazon, or pharmacies like CVS can forward them.

Amazon Prime members get special benefits, such as discounts of up to 80% on generic drugs and 40% on brand name drugs when they pay without insurance, as well as two-day delivery. Service is not available in Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, or Minnesota.

I decided to see how the process works firsthand by ordering my prescription drugs through Amazon. I’m not a primary member, but the ease of getting my medication administered during the pandemic appealed to me.

I quickly signed up for the service, but Amazon said it takes days to get prescriptions transferred from other pharmacies. After asking my doctor to transfer my medication, the company said free shipping would take 5 days.

“From the Amazon.com store, it’s easy to type in a drug name and see availability and savings for Prime members,” Amazon spokesperson Jacquelyn Miller said. “Before checking out, customers with insurance on file can compare their copayments, the uninsured price, or the savings available with the new Prescription Premium benefit to choose their lowest price option.”
