Momentum appears to be heading towards a divorce between Carson Wentz and the Eagles, a split the Eagles are not yet quite willing to accept.
Sources close to the team said general manager Howie Roseman recently spoke to tight end Zach Ertz about how they can make things work with their disgruntled quarterback.
Ertz and Wentz developed a close relationship when Wentz arrived in 2016, so it’s probably no surprise that the GM tries to leave nothing behind in his quest to try to get it right with the quarterback he’s been in. invested a fortune this summer. from 2019.
Even if that means trying to bring in Wentz’s good friend.
Complicating matters further is that Roseman could be forced to trade the veteran Pro Bowl, knowing he probably can’t afford Ertz with a salary cap that is bursting to the brim.
As for Wentz, a potential trade is not yet on the table.
“It’s not something we’re talking about right now,” the managing director said when asked to confirm that he had not ruled out negotiating Wentz. “We’re talking about a guy who is immensely talented, has a great work ethic, and does everything we can to put him in the best possible position to be successful …
“I think Carson, anyone who knows Carson knows how strong he is and knows how much he believes in his own abilities. As for why we haven’t had a good season, it’s not just about one player, and I think when you look at that the team as a whole hasn’t been up to par. live up to expectations. The moves we made didn’t live up to expectations, and putting it on Carson isn’t fair.
Asking Ertz for help can also be interpreted as an attempt by Hail Mary to try to keep Wentz in Philadelphia, so the GM spares no effort as he tries to find a way to keep Wentz in Philadelphia. .
Ertz said on Monday that he and Roseman have a good relationship. In fact, he said it was great despite what appeared to be an argument between the two at training camp last summer.
“He’s someone who took a chance on me when I was 22, he and Coach Kelly brought me (as a second round pick in 2013) together,” Ertz said. “I’m in no way someone to hold a grudge, and I’ve never gotten to this point where I feel like I should hold a grudge.” We have a very good relationship. I have a great relationship with everyone in the building because we’ve been through so much together.
“I really love everything this organization stands for and a lot of it is thanks to Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie, Howie and Doug (Pederson) leading it in a way.
Rosman also praised Ertz.
“Zach is one of the really great guys we’ve had in this organization in the 21 years I’ve been here,” he said.
It’s clear the Eagles want Wentz to return. And maybe it would have been possible if the franchise had left head coach Doug Pederson, whose decision – and his only decision – to park Wentz on the bench, making him the guy of the fall for a season. who took too many turns to the left to count.
The situation can be untenable, however, and Wentz could force the Eagles’ hand by publicly asking for a trade.
So Roseman turned to Ertz.
He was asked if he had seen last weekend’s report that Wentz is asking for a trade.
“I haven’t told him about his plan for the future,” Ertz said on Monday. “This week has been honestly a lot of thinking, but I won’t be Carson’s spokesperson.”
Roseman hopes Ertz can at least be the go-between.
