BELMONT, Miss. (WCBI) – Belmont went 1-7 last season. Head Coach Jason Coker knows what his guys need to do to get back on track.

“You just have to stay healthy. We have to stay healthy and avoid injury, ”Coker said. “Stay more consistent. It’s a closer group. The work ethic is much better and they are a bit like family.

The Cardinals return nine seniors and their linebackers will be the safety cover.

“Everyone came back from our linebacker group, but only one, so we’re going to rely heavily on them,” Coker said.

“Work hard. Everyone’s put in their time and we’re more together as a team. We have a better connection,” said senior linebacker Myles Cox.

“We’re dogs,” said senior linebacker River Ford. “We’ve been working here for the second year and we’re not afraid to hit anyone.”

Gavin Lynch started the Cardinals’ last game in 2020 and earned the position of starting quarterback. Coker is impressed with his versatility.

“He knows offense, how to execute it and he can play RB for us too, but he’s our QB right now,” Coker said. “He can execute the offense and knows it very well and has more playing experience.”

“It’s pretty nerve-racking, but our offense has a lot of talent, so we’ll do some good things this year,” said Lynch.

Belmont’s season kicks off Friday August 27 in Smithville.
