Huawei FreeBuds 3 are noise canceling AirPods for your Android

For Huawei, IFA is generally the place where its latest mobile chips are unveiled, and this year is no different. In addition to its latest chip, the company had a new silicon wafer Kirin – the A1 portable and centered on headphones. It's apparently the world's first Bluetooth 5.1 and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.1 chip. Why should you worry about having it in your next pair of wireless headphones? The chip can offer a dual-channel Bluetooth connection, which means 30% reduced latency and 50% lower power consumption – crucial statistics for tiny audio products. Because of the Huawei chipset, this feature will only be activated for the moment on the phones of this company.

The FreeBuds 3 are the flagship product of this new chip and, instead of opting for the design of the in-ear earpiece of most true wireless headphones, keep the design of the stem earpiece that is just right in your ear, at the AirPods. They will be delivered in a circular carrying case, in black or glossy white color options, and will charge the headset up to 20 hours. The FreeBuds themselves will last four hours in your ears.

The flagship feature is active noise cancellation (ANC), a rarity for this type of wireless headset. Huawei says it's the world's first open ANC helmet. You can say that the company has made considerable efforts to make the FreeBuds 3 comfortable for open heads – they are much more polished than the predecessors. I think the biggest problem is whether you can tolerate an open-fit. I prefer rubber-tipped heads because I appreciate the seal in my ear and the way it blocks noises. Others will (and will) disagree.

The cancellation of ambient noise here should help alleviate this problem. ANC can not only handle an ambient noise reduction of up to 15 dB for each ear canal, but, according to Huawei, the ends of each headset can pick up vocal vibrations via a "bone sensor". This detects when you speak and helps to clarify and amplify when you speak on calls.

This is another Huawei claim at this point, but the sensor associated with a specially designed microphone conduit can apparently work so well that you can conduct a "perfectly clear" conversation while cycling at high speed. Also worthy of note is a latency of 190 ms, which exceeds latency figures for the incredible Sony WF-1000XM3 buds and the two iterations of Apple's AirPod – this is an important element for those who use their headphones for play or watch videos.

The new Huawei drives are also rechargeable wireless and the company is quick to make comparisons with the AirPod's charging speeds. Its version will apparently charge a 100% faster wired connection and a 50% faster wireless connection.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the headset comes from Huawei's companion app. While I only saw it in Chinese, it contained an ANC selector that, unlike the application sliders for Sony headphones and others, modulated the noise suppression. It was less about canceling the noise level than removing the noise level. (Yeah, I know I'm still a little confused.)

This means that users like me (and the editor of Reviews, Cherlynn Low, in the video above) could calibrate the noise cancellation to target what we did not want to hear, let it be less from plane buzzing or coffee chatter. It's damn cool. A spokesman for Huawei said some people might find that some NCAs work better than others and that this is due to the way in which people's ear canals have a different shape. While Cherlynn found the ANC effective on our effective demonstration unit, my questionable ears (I had a tinnitus series at IFA) could not detect any changes. Once I was able to edit the NC profile, however, I was in business.

The sound quality seemed at the same level as the Apple AirPods, although the ANC (which was a bit too weak for me) helped Huawei to move forward an inch. I've been spoiled by a few days of testing Sony's truly wireless heads, and its own ANC, so I know that the quality of sounds for this category is constantly improving. Sony has always sounded better, but if you're looking for open heads, at this point, Huawei's heads seemed like a serious suitor. More tests are definitely needed.

Huawei's Alex Wang said the FreeBuds 3 would be cheaper than the $ 199 AirPods, but he did not specify a price. And, unsurprisingly, no comment on the chances of US availability. In Europe and other territories, however, headphones will be launched next month.
