After spending a lot of time with the Huawei Mate X, I have to admit it's the most stylish foldable camera you can buy later – as long as you live outside of North America.
For months, Samsung and Huawei have been tackling manufacturing and quality control issues to ensure that the two most remarkable folding devices of the first generation can be marketed. At present, the two companies are embarking on a launching run for very different reasons, but with the ultimate goal of defining the foldable smartphone market.
After spending time with both phones, I think I can now answer some common questions and notable concerns about the outdoor folding device. Although the potential price of $ 2,000 + may be a bit difficult to swallow, there is no doubt that the form factor is incredibly appealing.

Hardware and Design
I've said at the top of this piece that the Mate X is the most stylish collapsible device, and I say it because it's like we had the experience of owning a smartphone that s & # 39; 39; opens with a huge screen, while keeping the imprint of a full screen smartphone and the design overrides that of the Galaxy Fold.
The screen has what I would describe as a thick tempered glass screen protector feel. It also comes with a pre-applied screen protector that takes the weight of pocket lint, dirt and grime in your pants. This is not enough to protect your phone against damage simply due to the design. This is why Huawei will include some kind of handbag when buying the Mate X.
As for the "fold" of the screen, it is really noticeable when you look at the display at an odd angle. It is actually harder to feel under the finger than I had anticipated too. It's smooth and quite consistent when you know that it bends in the middle.
I understand that some of you who are reading will wonder why the Mate X is a more practical option. Let me say it this way: the Galaxy Fold is designed to be unfolded, the Mate X is designed to include a fold. As a result, it is more like a phone with extended features than a foldable screen. The button of the clasp at the back strengthens it, because it keeps the back well closed. It is also a dream to press and close, like a click on a ballpoint pen button.
Overall, the phone looks much more stylish than any other foldable smartphone at this early stage of technology, at least from a design standpoint. That said, it seems much more suitable for right-handed people with the big buttons on the right side, as well as the handle and the camera series.
Software and performance
We still do not know if the device will eventually be compatible with Google Play services. Richard Yu himself confirmed that it was unlikely that the Mate X came with Google apps. This means that despite the built-in support of folding phones in Android 10, recently released, Huawei needs to ensure that everything is fully optimized for unfolded display.
I noticed that the YouTube web application was having problems recognizing the orientation of the display when it was unfolded and for full-screen viewing. Playing back video in landscape mode affects the crease, which means you're holding the camera in the wrong direction when watching videos. As it was the Chinese version of Android Pie without Google Play service. As a result, we could not verify if this would happen in the YouTube app.
Of course, with the Kirin 980 chipset inside the Mate X was catchy during our practice period. There were a few small hiccups and holdups because of the uneven attached Wi-Fi data connection, but no major slowdowns that I could was a result of the plant's internals. It will be interesting to see if the updated version of the Kirin 990 will still have better performance on a daily basis.
Camera
The camera seems to be quite as efficient as the current offers of the Chinese smartphone brand. You have a triple camera system consisting of a main sensor, ultra wide and a telephoto lens, but without real selfie camera. Instead, Huawei uses an elegant method of using the fold outward and the "side grip" to allow you to rotate the phone to take a selfie.
A prompt on the screen asks you to flip the phone and a smaller camera UI opens on the smallest part of the screen to allow you to frame your photo. In practice, this is a really good way to reduce the need for a screen cut.
It also means that you get exactly the same quality for every type of photo or video. I would not be surprised to see Mate X at the top of the DxOMark rankings for this reason. Admittedly, synthetic tests and results do not necessarily translate into concrete results.
Huawei Mate X first verdict
Like many of you, I was concerned (and continue to be) that the folding screen could be a serious weakness for Mate X. I still can not say how much it will withstand days and weeks of slipping in and out of your pocket, folding and hugging or simply scrolling, sweeping and beating day-to-day. I can say however that the experience and the hardware have far exceeded my expectations and I am really excited about the future of foldable smartphones.
The possibility of having a phone capable of turning into a tablet in an instant is superb. I look forward to seeing what strange and wonderful preparations we will see in the years to come. We could finally have the chance to see a competitor of laptops that will fit in your pocket within five years. After a while, the Mate X appears as the most solid first step towards a brand new form factor.
Obviously, the main problem will be the lack of Google Play services. Not to mention a potential price of $ 2,000 +. I will say that for the moment, as a first generation version and for what the Mate X offers, this price seems a bit justified given what it brings to the table.
