Sheriff Kalvin Barrett provides update on missing couple

MADISON, Wisconsin – Authorities said they found human remains Thursday at a rural property in Dane County while investigating a missing Windsor couple.

Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said he would not speculate whether the remains belonged to the missing couple or not. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy of the remains over the weekend, according to a press release.

Bart and Krista Halderson, 50 and 53, were last seen at their home on Thursday, July 1.

“Members of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office want to first extend our thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of Bart and Krista Halderson,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. “It has been a trying and moving time and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office is doing everything possible to bring this investigation to a close and justice.”

The couple’s son, Chandler Halderson, 23, said the couple left for a July 4 weekend in Langlade County before 6 a.m. on Friday July 2. Halderson has since been arrested for providing law enforcement with false information about his parents’ whereabouts.

In an interview with News 3 Now, Halderson said his parents were picked up by friends on the morning of July 2, but authorities said they believed their disappearance was suspicious.

“Our family would like to thank everyone for their support in this difficult situation, it means a lot to us,” said members of the Halderson family in a statement shared by the sheriff’s office. “We continue to ask for help from anyone who may have information about Bart and Krista’s whereabouts. We have high hopes for the best possible result.

Anyone with information on her location is urged to contact the Dane County Communications Center or the Sheriff’s Office information line.

It’s a breaking story that will be updated.
