Hundreds of families opposed to vaccinations gathered Wednesday in the California Capitol to protest a bill that would give the state control over children exempt from mandatory vaccinations, the Sacramento Bee reported.

According to the newspaper, the families described the legislation as "draconian", a protester saying lawmakers supporting the bill are "brainwashed".

The protests took place during a hearing on the bill at the Senate Health Committee.

The doctors countered the protesters by encouraging the committee to approve the legislation, which would establish a system of monitoring doctors dispensing medical exemptions for vaccinations, according to Bee.

The bill would require the state of California's health department to check each standard medical exemption form completed by doctors and create a database indicating the doctors who grant the exemptions.

Doctors say the bill will prevent disease outbreaks, according to the newspaper.

The demonstrations took place the same day that the federal health authorities reported that the number of measles cases in the United States had reached a record since the disease was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000.

The increase in the number of cases is due in part to the spread of misinformation about vaccines and the resulting skepticism about the vaccination of children.

State Senator Richard Pan, the author of the law, told Bee that the bill "guarantees students who actually need a medical expense exemption a exemption."

Several states have again focused on vaccine exemptions among a series of measles outbreaks across the country. Earlier this month, lawmakers in New York called for an end to non-medical immunization exemptions for school-age children in the measles epidemic.
