Three hundred coronavirus vaccines were delivered to the city of Newark and deemed unusable because they were not refrigerated in a timely manner, a local health official said.
The matter is currently under investigation, said Mark Wade, director of the Department of Community Health and Wellness.
“We have revised our delivery and assessment procedures and protocols, which will be closely monitored to prevent this from happening again,” Wade said in a statement.
TAPinto Newark first reported the problem. A city spokesperson did not immediately respond when asked if any unusable vaccines had been administered.
It was not immediately clear which vaccine was being studied. The city, however, vaccinated ministers at a press conference at the Newark Department of Health and Welfare with the Moderna vaccine.
The Moderna vaccine should be stored between -13 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the CDC. It can be stored in the refrigerator at temperatures between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit for up to 30 days before using the vials.
The city has administered vaccinations at sites across Newark, including pop-up locations.
