LEE COUNTY, Fla .– Hundreds of people set up a camp in Lee County on Tuesday night to line up for a COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday morning.
At 6:30 a.m., all three vaccination sites in Lee County were at full capacity. The afternoon vaccine sessions are closed because the assigned doses have been assigned.
Additional sites will open next week.
Vaccinations are scheduled at three different locations:
- North Fort Myers: North Fort Myers Rec. Center
- Cape Coral: Cultural Park Theater
- Fort Myers: Lakes Regional Park Library
Each site received 800 doses of the vaccine on Wednesday.
Vaccines are only for people 65 years of age and older or for healthcare workers.
People started lining up for the vaccine as early as Tuesday morning.
Abdulla Benkhatar, 90, has been in line for 10 a.m. Tuesday. It is the first in line at North Fort Myers Rec. Center.
“It’s very difficult,” he says. “We’ve been home for almost 10 months now. It’s really important for me, for my health, and for being able to do things that I love to do and get back to normal.
Benkhatar said he was delighted to see his grandchildren again.
Just south, at the Lakes Regional Library, dozens began lining up on Tuesday evening to mark their place in line.
People brought extra coats, chairs, blankets and mini tents. Just before 4 a.m. it looked like there were over 300 people in line.
At the theater in Cape Coral Cultural Park, people also lined up on Tuesday evening, some waiting in their cars, even bringing campervans.
Vaccinations should not start before 9 a.m.
On Monday and Tuesday, the first days of vaccine administration, the sites reached capacity in the wee hours of the morning.
The Department of Health has yet to release details of upcoming vaccination sites in Lee County.
