Students from two high schools in Florida may have been exposed to hepatitis A after an employee at the place where their graduation was held tested positive for the virus. Students attending F. W. Springstead High School in Spring Hill and Central High in Brooksville were briefed after the Hernando County Health Department confirmed that an employee of the Silverthorn Country Club restaurant had been diagnosed positive.
"The employee could have clients exposed between April 12 and April 30, 2019," according to the press release.

Springstead High School officials, who published the press release on their website, told ABC Action News that the prom was held on April 27, while Central High students were present on April 13. .
According to the press release, customers may have been exposed between April 12 and April 30.

The press release asked people who consumed food or beverages at the restaurant between April 12 and April 16 to monitor the onset of symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, dark urine, fever, diarrhea, pale white stools and eyes and yellow skin. The Ministry of Health announced it was offering free vaccines against hepatitis A on May 1st and 3rd as well as May 6th and May 8th.

"It's amazing," said Alyssa Fiorvante, a student who attended the prom, at WFLA.com. "It's crazy to think that because all these people have to go out of their way because they eat and drink their food."

Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable liver disease caused by a virus, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is usually passed from person to person through the fecal-oral route or through the consumption of contaminated food or water. There is no chronic infection and the symptoms disappear within two months.
