The Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards traded Russell Westbrook and John Wall after weeks of endless rumors.
Westbrook had confirmed plans to be placed on the trading block in mid-November. His refusal to show up to preseason camp was a signal he wanted out, and quickly. So the Rockets began shopping for him in earnest, after preliminary talks with Charlotte were fruitless.

Eventually, the Rockets had to settle in, swapping for another runaway star at John Wall. Wall was furious with the wizard reception for buying it behind his back.
Most NBA spectators see the trade as a washout – a low-reward deal achieved simply because of roster situations. NBA executives agree with this sentiment.
How NBA Executives Responded to John Wall-Russell Westbrook Trade
One NBA executive was particularly scathing in his review of Westbrook. He thinks the Brody would actually slow Beal down.

Another executive was a little more positive about the whole thing, but he still didn’t seem too worried about the Rockets getting stronger.
“It’s a wash. Both teams needed to make a trade. Washington has to give up a pick because Wall has a bigger injury history and hasn’t played in two years. The contracts were the same. Russ should be really good in the East. Scotty (Brooks) should know how to use it.
“Washington will be better than them since Russ played and Wall wasn’t. I think Washington is a playoff team for sure.
Overall, this is the kind of trading that has the potential to improve both the Rockets and the Wizards, but not by much.
