Ian McKellen Getting the COVID-19 vaccine warmed my cold heart

We are in the throes of a global pandemic, Donald Trump is still technically president, and even the snow that elegantly frosted much of the East Coast last night is quickly turning to gray slush. All of that was enough to put me in a bad mood this morning – that is, until I saw a video of beloved English actor Ian McKellen receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

The 81-year-old actor went on to tweet that he “wouldn’t hesitate to recommend [the vaccine] to anyone ”, which could have a profound impact at a time when many are still hesitant to get vaccinated.

McKellen, who was among one of the first groups eligible to receive the vaccine in the UK, alongside healthcare workers and nursing home residents, said in a press release he was impressed with ease of the process, stating: having a role to play in the fight against the coronavirus and doing our part and getting vaccinated will save lives.

I’m not sure exactly why watching McKellen get the shot brought so much joy to me, to be honest. Is it because seeing familiar faces doing their part to protect themselves and their communities from COVID-19 gives me hope for a future in which I can safely leave my room with some regularity? Or frankly, is it because McKellen is the cutest man in the world and I just want him to be happy and safe?

Either way, it turns out that the good news is … good, and we get a lot of it, like Prue Leith from Pastry the celebrity also recently received the vaccine, declaring it “painless”. Protect Prue and Ian at all costs!
