Students from an Illinois high school would hold a strike Tuesday to protest their fellow students who posted images of themselves in blackface on social media.
Four students from Homewood-Flossmoor High School, in Illinois, reportedly published photos of themselves in black and allegedly filmed a video showing that they lived in a fast food restaurant wearing makeup dark while negatively speaking African-American girls, according to local newspaper ABC 7.
School administrators, who represent nearly 70% of blacks, confirmed the existence of publications on social networks "extremely offensive and culturally insensitive" and said they met Sunday families of students who published these publications, reported The Chicago Tribune.
The videos and images of white blackface students, one of whom wore a high school hoodie, were posted on Snapchat. The images were captured and widely shared by all students over the weekend.
Students have not been publicly identified by high school administrators because of privacy laws.
Cotrell Moore, a senior at Homewood-Flossmoor, told ABC-7 that students were participating in the walkout to ask administrators to punish the students involved in this racist incident.
"Hopefully every student participating really participates in the real meaning that it should be, to some sort of punishment," Moore said.
The school has not indicated how or if students involved in the blackface incident would be punished.
"We have been informed that some of our students could participate in a walkout today to express their frustration with the messages and actions of a few students on social media this past weekend," writes the school. in a letter to parents about the planned walkout "We support their right to speak out and we will work to ensure that all students are safe and respected."
The letter added that access to the school campus would be closed during the walkout.
