People were taken aback when Minority Parliamentary Leader Kevin McCarthy posted a five-minute video of himself reading Dr Seuss. Green eggs and ham, days after six of the author’s books were withdrawn from publication.
Captioning the long Friday night video, Mr McCarthy wrote, “I still love Dr. Seuss, so I decided to read Green Eggs and Ham. RT if you still love it too!
Mr McCarthy released the video just days after Dr Seuss Enterprises, the company that manages the estate of Theodor Seuss Geisel, announced that six of his books written under the pseudonym Dr Seuss had been withdrawn from publication due to of their use of “hurtful and bad” imagery.
The decision to withdraw the books drew criticism from conservative commentators and prominent Republican politicians, as Texas Senator Ted Cruz suggested without proof that it was President Joe Biden’s fault.
The six titles taken from the publication are And to think that I saw him on Mulberry Street, If I ran the zoo, McElligot Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Super scrambled eggs!, and Cat quizer.
However, as Green eggs and ham was not affected by the decision, people were unsure why Mr. McCarthy chose this book for its bizarre read.
Author Helen Kennedy replied to the House Minority Leader: “I notice you don’t read the ones that Seuss’ domain thinks are too offensive to keep publishing. Why so? “And @fyungong asked,” I’m so confused right now! Lol what’s going on Nobody is canceling Seuss. “
Political scientist Seth Masket wrote: “How nice! You could probably have bought it in any bookstore in the country, ”and writer Robert VerBruggen added:“ If you read a book in protest but don’t choose one of the banned books, what is your? point of view? “
Others thought Mr McCarthy should focus on the issues presented by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Daily Beast editor-in-chief Molly Jong-Fast responding: “Democrats are passing Covid relief and Republicans are reading Dr. Seuss. “
While during CNN tonight Host Don Lemon slammed Mr. McCarthy on Friday, saying, “While Americans are desperate for vaccinations and desperate for Covid relief, here’s what Kevin McCarthy is doing right now.”
Mr. Lemon continued, “It really happened. These are your Republican leaders ”and added that Mr. McCarthy apparently had no more pressing problem than stoking“ this bogus scandal ”.
Geisel’s work has recently come under renewed scrutiny for its nuances and racist tropes, with the decision to remove the books from publication being taken after discussion “with a panel of experts, including educators.” , the editors announced on Tuesday.
In a statement regarding his decision to remove the six books from publication on Tuesday, Dr Seuss Enterprises said that “these books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.”
The company added, “Stopping the sale of these books is only part of our commitment and larger plan to ensure that the Dr Seuss Enterprises catalog represents and supports all communities and families.”
