Michigan counties have reported signs of progress in efforts to vaccinate people to reduce transmission of COVID-19 this week, with several saying they expect an increase in vaccine supply that will allow them to vaccinate more people.
On Wednesday, March 3, Michigan announced that it would open eligible for vaccination for people 50 years of age and older, with certain requirements, starting Monday, March 8.
Residents 50 and older who have “pre-existing conditions, disabilities and other medical vulnerabilities” will become eligible on Monday, March 8, confirmed Bobby Leddy, press secretary to Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Two weeks later, starting March 22, all residents 50 and over will be eligible, the governor’s office said.

The state’s eligible opening does not mean that all counties will immediately begin receiving patients from this group. Some counties have not released full details of local deployments and when vaccinations will be available for people 50 and older.
Health officials are still working to complete immunization of people in the immunization phase which includes people aged 65 and over and others. About half of Michigan residents aged 65 and over have now been vaccinated.
